This project consisted of adding an in-law suite and garage to a house on a beautiful piece of land north of Charlottesville. The original house was recently built, but was not properly positioned to take advantage of the spectacular south-facing view down into a valley and beyond. This is a great example of how proper design can transform a property, even if the existing structure was not thoughtfully incorporated into the landscape. The addition of the garage also allowed us to create more outdoor space between the structures, in this case a vegetable garden complete with fencing to keep the deer out. We made some modifications to the existing structure to tie the design together, including replacing the old vinyl siding with board and batten and swapping the front porch columns to match our new Douglas fir timber. Rerouting the driveway was a finishing touch that made for a more interesting “reveal” as one approaches, as well as providing a nicer view from the front of the original home.
